Snail - Light Striped Purple Mystery

Light Striped Purple Mystery Snail These are named for both the color of the foot (body) and the shell color. In this instance, "light" is the color of the foot. "Purple is the base color of the shell. This is a purple base with a darker purple stripe on a white-bodied snail. The color is best when they are very young. As they age, the purple is less obvious. The intensity of the stripes can also vary.
We are not advertising these as having 'perfect' shells. Some will show some small imperfection like a slight crack or some pitting around the spiral. The older they get, the obvious these imperfections can become. Small ones tend to have nothing too obvious.
What to Expect - Pomacea diffusa (formally P. bridgesii), these beautiful snails are an apple snail that comes in several color varieties. We will be adding more color varieties in the future. The only plant we've seen them eat is duckweed - which they love. A really big one will grow to about 2.25" in diameter. They lay their eggs in a cluster just above the waterline, so it's easy to control them. Just remove the clusters or keep the water to the top of the tank. Dark Striped Purple (DSP) has a dark foot with purple shell and purple stripes. The Light Striped Purple (LSP) has a light foot with a purple shell and purple stripes. The foot color affects the way the shell base color appears and the shade of the purple. There is a fair amount of variation among adults. The ivory apple snail has a light foot in a clear shell. Keep in mind that shell color changes as they grow. As it grows, the shell becomes thicker and less translucent. The pigments often deepen and change in hue. Large adults tend to have less bright colors (though not always) and shells with more imperfections.
Diet - They will eat almost anything, but in our experience they must have quite a bit of protein. Many people feed them mostly vegetables and they will not grow as well without higher protein levels. We feed them a lot of Vegetable Discs, Weekender Pellets, and Primal Pellets.

They are doing excellent! I was worried when they arrived because we had a major heat spell that week and the package although we'll packaged was pretty warm inside. I opened it up and the light purple, "Magenta" snails ordered were alive in inside the container of water. The water they traveled in was pretty dirty and was warmer then I was comfortable with for them. I took them out of their traveling container and placed them in some clean tank water for 35 minutes adding a little more tank water every 15 minutes to acclimate. They are housed with 3 dark purple Mystery Snails, 2 Nerite snails, 1 Japanese Trapdoor baby snail and 1 white, female Betta. They are a gorgeous Magenta color and have healthy looking shells . I would definitely order from them again!

Snails are very hardy and can handle cold quite well, but they will die if the temperatures get much below 20 F. They will also not travel well if the box gets much above 80 F for too many hours.
- "Caution, PLEASE READ": We pack them well, but they will not handle way below freezing conditions or extreme heat for long. Night-time lows and day-time highs are both important. You should check our weather also (zip 14760). Generally they ship well in temps between 20 F and 80 F. When you receive them, acclimate them to the temperature of your tank like you would a fish.
- Choose an appropriate shipping method when ordering. Try to get them to you within 2 days. Do not order with UPS Ground shipping if you are more than 1500 miles from us. UPS 2nd Day is a much better choice. Priority mail is NOT a reliable service.
- We ship snails Mon & Tues only. Orders that arrive after 8 AM est, will not ship until the following business day.
- Preferably, have them sent to a place where they will not sit in the sun or freezing temps. PO Boxes are good. Business addresses are good. Mailboxes outside are not a good idea unless you're sure to get them out right away. If they sit in the sun for too long, they will die.
- We caution people to be leery of ordering from anyone who just wraps them in wet paper towels. That is a very stressful way to ship snails. We put them in water, which moderates the temperature and greatly increases their odds of being in good shape on arrival.
- We cannot ship these or any live items to Canada.
- There is a small handling charge added to all orders with live items. This is because of the greater time spent packaging and the cost of insulation, heat packs if needed and the fact that the carriers do not insure anything live that is lost or damaged in transit.
